Anti-Wrinkle injections

The week-end Facelift

Anti-wrinkle injections are used to relax the muscles of expression.  They result in smoothing of lines and a more relaxed appearance.  The effect of the injections last 3 to 6 months.  The wrinkles that will respond best are the ones around the top of the bridge of the nose (frown lines), the ones on the outside of the eyes (crow’s feet) and the ones on the forehead (worry lines).

Wrinkles and Frown Lines
Frown lines are the result of gathering or pulling of skin between the eyebrows into a fold. These unattractive folds and furrows are caused by the repeated action of underlying muscles. Years of squinting and frowning tend to leave deep wrinkles in the skin between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose, across the forehead, and at the corners of the eyes. Frown lines produce an angry or sad look that can detract from a pleasant facial appearance.  These wrinkles and lines can be remedied by Anti-wrinkle injections.

What are Anti-wrinkle injections?
They are a purified substance which blocks the nerve signals from the brain to the muscles.  By injecting very tiny amounts into specific muscles on the face they cause local relaxation.

How much do Anti-wrinkle injections cost?
The cost depends on the quantity of product used. Anti-wrinkle injections are measured in units.  Each unit costs $22 inclusive of GST.  Most patients use 20 units and spend $440.  Some patients have higher requirements.  If the initial treatment does not work sufficiently, a “top-up” dose may be required after two weeks.

How are Anti-wrinkle injections performed?
Treatment involves injection of very small amounts of product. The  treatment is well tolerated and takes just a few minutes with no "down time" or prolonged recovery period. The injections take effect about 3 to 7 days after treatment. The improvement generally lasts about 3 to 6 months, the effect gradually fades thereafter and muscle action returns.  With repeated treatments, most patients experience thinning of their muscles which usually results in longer-lasting results approaching 6 months duration of action.

Examples of Anti-wrinkle injection treatments

Crows Feet
Notice the softening of the lines on the outer part of the eyes.  Lines are not removed completely but are significantly reduced.  Appearance in enhanced whilst maintaining a natural look.

Worry Lines
Relaxation of the forehead muscles results in a smoother more confident appearance.  This type of treatment can also be used to reduce headaches due to tension and stress.

Are there any side effects?
Soreness or mild bruising may occur around the injection sites. Makeup may be worn after treatments, but care should be taken to avoid pressing or massaging the area for several hours. A temporary headache is not uncommon after injections in the forehead area, especially after the first treatment. In rare instances patients may develop temporary droopiness of eyebrows or eyelids.  Side effects are usually mild and temporary and do not significantly limit routine activities.

Are there any alternatives to Anti-wrinkle injections?
Practicing expressions in front of a mirror may help reduce frowning.  Surgery is available to permanently divide the muscles of expression.   If you are interested in surgery, please ask.

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

What will happen?
Your injections will take at least two days to take effect …. So …. Relax and wait for things to happen.
During the first two days, the needle marks will settle and disappear.  Redness and swelling in the treatment areas will also disappear.  You can apply ice compresses to the treatment areas to speed up recovery.

How do I apply ice-compresses?
The most important thing to remember is to never apply ice directly to the skin of the face because it can cause burning of the skin.  Always place a barrier between the ice and the skin.  A suitable barrier is a cloth like a tea towel.  Ideally the cloth should be lightly damp.  Place the ice or ice-pack inside the damp cloth and apply to the treatment areas for 5 to 10 minutes two to four times per day.  Apply ice compresses only if necessary, most people do not need them.

What should I avoid?
It is recommended that you do not lay down flat on your back for the first 4 hours after receiving treatment.

What can I do to improve my result?
Essentially go on with your life as usual.

What shall I do if my injections do not work?
Always wait one full week to give the injections adequate time to work.  If you still feel that they haven't worked, come in for a follow up appointment.
